Legendary Odia film actor Uttam Mohanty passed away late Thursday night while undergoing treatment for liver cirrhosis at a multi-specialty hospital in Gurugram. He was 66.
Mohanty had been airlifted to Gurugram on February 8 for specialized treatment after being initially admitted to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar. His health reportedly took a turn for the worse while shooting for the Odia film Bou Butu Bhoota.
A towering figure in the Odia film industry, Mohanty acted in over 135 Odia films and 30 Bengali movies. He also appeared in the Hindi film Naya Zaher, leaving a lasting impact across multiple film industries.
News of his passing has left Odisha in mourning, with condolences pouring in from all corners.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep sorrow over his demise, calling Mohanty a “pole star of the Odia entertainment industry” who captivated audiences for over two decades. “His passing is an irreparable loss to the film industry and the state,” the CM said, announcing that his last rites will be conducted with full state honors.
Minister of State for Odia Language, Literature, and Culture, Suryabanshi Suraj, also paid tribute on social media, calling Mohanty “the numero uno actor of the Odia film industry.” He added, “His meticulous acting touched the hearts of countless Odia cinema lovers. Odisha and the industry will forever remember his contributions. Om Shanti.”
Uttam Mohanty was married to renowned Odia actress Aparajita Mohanty and was the father of popular actor Babusan.
His memorable performances in iconic Odia films like Danda Balunga, Jahaku Rakhibe Ananta, Rajanigandha, Chaka Bhaunri, Daiba Daudi, Kanya Dana, Chaka Akhi Sabu Dekhuchi, Pua Mora Kala Thakura, and Lakhe Shiba Puji Paichhi Pua will keep his legacy alive in the hearts of movie lovers.
