Transforming Odisha: 3 More Cities to Get a Smart Urban Upgrade

Published On:

The Odisha government is set to expand its successful urban development initiative to three more cities—Puri-Konark (PK), Cuttack, and Berhampur—following the remarkable transformation witnessed in Bhubaneswar. The decision to implement the Town Planning (TP) scheme in these areas was finalized during a high-level meeting led by Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mohapatra.

What is the ‘Triple City’ Initiative?

The ‘Triple City’ project focuses on structured land management and improving essential infrastructure across these key urban areas. The initiative covers:

  • Puri & Konark – Known for their religious and historical significance.
  • Cuttack – A major industrial and commercial hub.
  • Berhampur – Popularly called the ‘Silk City’ due to its famous textile industry.

Under this scheme, 40% of land from private landowners in these cities will be acquired to develop better roads, drainage systems, electricity networks, markets, and parks. The remaining 60% of their land will stay with the owners, but with improved access to public infrastructure.

Government Pushes for Fast Implementation

Minister Mohapatra has urged authorities to speed up the implementation of the revised scheme while ensuring fairness and transparency. He emphasized protecting local residents from any exploitation by middlemen and ensuring that landowners benefit from the improved facilities.

Improving Infrastructure for All

Speaking on the plan, the Minister highlighted the government’s focus on inclusive development. “Our goal is to ensure that urban planning benefits all, not just those who live near main roads. Often, people in the interiors struggle due to poor connectivity and lack of space. By acquiring 40% of land for infrastructure development, we aim to provide better roads, drainage, sewage systems, and street lighting for everyone,” he explained.

With this expansion, Odisha aims to create well-planned and sustainable urban environments that enhance the quality of life for its residents while maintaining fairness in land distribution.
