A few days ago, a government school teacher from Bolangir district found himself in a desperate situation. Prabhudatta Sahoo, who works at a primary school in Bandhanbahal village, had not received his salary for three months. With his finances in shambles and unable to afford even basic necessities, he applied for leave, explaining that he needed to take up work as a laborer just to support his family.
The matter caught the attention of IAS Ananya Das, the State Project Director, who immediately stepped in to help. Recognizing the urgency, she issued instructions to clear not only Sahoo’s pending salary but also to expedite payments for all teachers across the state. In her letter to the branch manager of CANARA Bank’s Bapujee Nagar branch in Bhubaneswar, she directed that funds for the fiscal year 2024-25—totaling approximately Rs 39.83 crores—be transferred to 30 designated accounts used for disbursing teachers’ salaries.
According to the letter from the Odisha School Education Programme Authority, the specified amount should be withdrawn from the SB account and credited to the respective bank accounts immediately. This decisive action is seen as a crucial step to relieve the financial strain on teachers who have been affected by the delay.
The delay in salary payments had been attributed to technical glitches on the digiGOV website, which processes payments for Odisha State Assistant Teachers in the ex-cadre. This issue has affected many educators across the state, making it difficult for them to manage their daily lives. With IAS Das’s intervention, there is now renewed hope that these delays will be resolved, ensuring that teachers receive the compensation they rightfully deserve.
