A major step is being taken to improve the security and sanctity of the famous Shri Jagannath Temple in Puri. The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) has decided to propose changes to the Shri Jagannath Temple Act, which governs the management and operations of the temple.
Why Is the Amendment Needed?
According to Chief Administrator Aravinda Padhee, the current rules do not have strong enough punishments for people who fly drones over the temple or take photos and videos inside using their mobile phones — both of which are strictly prohibited.
To address this, a special committee led by the District Collector will prepare a detailed proposal suggesting changes to the Act. This will then be sent to the Odisha government for approval.
Key Topics Discussed at the SJTA Meeting
The proposal to amend the law was part of a broader meeting where several important topics related to the temple’s functioning and development were discussed. These included:
- Preparations for the Rath Yatra (the grand Chariot Festival of Lord Jagannath)
- Renovation work on the Ratna Bhandar (the temple’s treasury room)
- Management of temple-owned land
- Planning the budget for the upcoming financial year 2025-26
- Arrangements to provide air-conditioned darshan (viewing of the deities) at the Nata Mandap (a ceremonial hall inside the temple)
Big Decision: Damaged Iron Beams to Be Replaced
One of the most critical decisions made in the meeting was regarding the structural safety of the Ratna Bhandar. Engineers have found that five iron beams (which connect the inner and outer parts of the treasury) have become corroded due to rust and wear.
To ensure safety and preservation, the temple administration has decided to:
- Replace these 5 iron beams with stainless steel box beams
- Complete the replacement work by Akshaya Tritiya (an auspicious Hindu day that usually falls in April or May)
In addition to the beams, the Khodalite stones (used in temple construction) that are damaged will also be replaced with similar stones to maintain the temple’s traditional architecture.
New Tech Initiatives for Devotees
The SJTA is also working on making Lord Jagannath more accessible to devotees, especially those who can’t visit in person. Here’s what they’re planning:
- An official YouTube channel for Lord Jagannath will be launched on the Odia New Year (usually mid-April).
- A new information center will be set up near the Gundicha Temple to help pilgrims.
- LED display boards will be installed around the temple to guide and inform visitors more effectively.
This meeting marks a major step forward in modernizing and preserving the heritage of the Shri Jagannath Temple. From tighter security rules and renovation of sacred structures to tech-enabled pilgrim services, the temple administration is working to balance tradition with modern needs.
