Cuttack: In a heartbreaking incident, a 19-year-old student, Ankan Dutta, tragically ended his life by setting himself on fire at his rented home in Mathasahi Gopaljew Lane, under the jurisdiction of Purighat police, on Tuesday night.
Ankan, originally from West Bengal, was living in Cuttack with his father while pursuing his Plus II studies at Christ College.
According to reports, he doused himself in diesel before igniting the flames. Locals quickly alerted the fire department, and emergency responders arrived at the scene to rescue him. Unfortunately, by the time help arrived, Ankan had already succumbed to his severe burns.
The exact reason behind his drastic decision remains unknown. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine what might have led to this tragic act.
Police sources revealed that Ankan had locked all doors and windows before setting himself on fire, suggesting he had planned the act in advance. His partially burned body was later handed over to the Purighat police for further examination.
This incident has left the community in shock, with many questioning what could have driven the young student to such an extreme step.
