Today, the world of dance mourns the loss of a true pioneer—Padma Shri Guru Mayadhar Rout, widely regarded as the “Father of Odissi Dance.” He passed away this morning at his home in New Delhi at the age of 95.
Born on July 6, 1930, Guru Mayadhar Rout began his dance journey at just seven years old with the traditional Gotipua style. In 1944, he became the first to perform Gotipua on stage, captivating audiences with his early promise and unique style.
During the 1950s, he played a vital role in shaping Odissi into the classical dance form it is known as today. Drawing on ancient texts and traditional teachings, he introduced key elements like Sanchari Bhava, Mudra Viniyoga, and Rasa Theory into the art form, laying down a structured and scholarly foundation.
In 1952, he broke new ground as the first Odissi teacher at Kala Vikas Kendra in Cuttack, and in 1959, he helped establish the Jayantika Association to further develop and codify Odissi dance. His commitment to the art carried him to Delhi in 1968, where he led the Odissi department at Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra from 1970 to 1995. He also started classes at the Jagannath Mandir in Delhi that same year. His legacy continues through his school, Jayantika (Mayadhar Raut School of Odissi Dance), which has centers around the globe, and through his many visits to over 35 countries to promote this beautiful dance form.
Guru Mayadhar Rout’s lifelong dedication to dance earned him numerous accolades, including the Tagore Akademi Ratna and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, among others. His contributions have left an indelible mark on the dance community, inspiring countless dancers and artists worldwide.
We remember him not only for his innovations and teaching but also for the passion and humanity he brought to every performance. May his soul rest in peace.
