To improve rural connectivity and uplift tribal communities, the central government has approved 26 new road projects in Odisha under the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN) scheme.
As part of this initiative, Rs 69.65 crore will be given to the state for building 63.27 kilometers of roads and two long-span bridges. These new roads will make it easier for remote tribal villages to connect with nearby towns and essential services.
This funding comes in addition to an earlier approval of 66 road projects covering 211.14 kilometers and four long-span bridges, which were sanctioned by the Ministry of Rural Development for Rs 219.40 crore.
Funding and Scope of the Projects
Under this approval:
- Odisha will receive Rs 69.65 crore in funding.
- The money will be used to build 63.27 kilometers of roads and construct two long-span bridges.
This is not the first time the Centre has funded such projects in the state. Earlier, the Ministry of Rural Development had already sanctioned:
- 66 road projects covering 211.14 kilometers
- 4 long-span bridges
- A total investment of Rs 219.40 crore
So, this new announcement is an extension of ongoing infrastructure work in Odisha under the same scheme.
Why These Projects Matter – The Core Objective
The primary purpose of these road and bridge projects is to connect Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) who live in very remote and hard-to-reach areas. These are communities that face extreme isolation, lack of basic services, and limited livelihood opportunities.
By building proper roads and bridges, the government hopes to:
- Provide all-weather connectivity (roads that are usable even during monsoons or harsh weather)
- Link these communities to healthcare centers, schools, markets, and government offices
- Create job opportunities by improving access to employment hubs
- Support local farmers and artisans by helping them transport their goods to markets
Overall, it’s a step toward reducing social and economic isolation and ensuring inclusive growth.
What is PM-JANMAN All About?
PM-JANMAN is a national scheme launched by the Indian government to support tribal populations, especially the 75 most vulnerable tribal groups spread across 18 states and 1 union territory.
This scheme isn’t just about roads. It’s a comprehensive development plan backed by a massive budget of Rs 24,104 crore. The goal is to give tribal communities access to basic services and a chance for a better future.
The scheme includes 11 key interventions, implemented through 9 different ministries, covering areas like:
- Safe housing
- Clean drinking water
- Education (especially for tribal children)
- Healthcare and nutrition
- Electrification
- Telecom connectivity
- Livelihood support and skill development
This coordinated effort ensures that multiple aspects of tribal welfare are addressed simultaneously.
A Step Toward “Viksit Bharat” – Developed India
These projects also tie into the Indian government’s vision of “Viksit Bharat” – a future where every citizen, regardless of their background or location, has access to basic amenities and equal opportunities for growth.
By focusing on PVTGs and remote rural areas, the government is making sure that development reaches the last person in line – a principle inspired by “Antyodaya” (upliftment of the most disadvantaged).
