In a major move to tackle the water crisis during the scorching summer months, the Odisha government has announced the installation of 21,300 new tube wells across the state. This initiative aims to ensure uninterrupted access to clean drinking water, especially in rural and water-stressed areas.
Ensuring Water for All: 21,300 Tube Wells Planned
Speaking on Friday, Rabi Narayan Naik, Odisha’s Drinking Water and Panchayati Raj Minister, said the decision is part of a larger mission to provide a safe and reliable water supply to every community, particularly during the harsh summer season when demand peaks and water sources dry up.
“No community will be left without access to drinking water,” he assured.
Currently, the state has over 5.2 lakh existing tube wells, but several areas still suffer from water scarcity. The additional 21,300 tube wells will be strategically installed in locations facing the most critical shortages. The government has also promised that all water-related grievances will be resolved within seven days of receiving complaints—a much-needed step towards responsive governance.
1.6 Lakh New Houses Under Antyodaya Gruha Yojana
In addition to the drinking water initiative, the government is ramping up its flagship Antyodaya Gruha Yojana. This scheme, focused on providing permanent housing for the poor and vulnerable, will see 1.60 lakh new homes built across the state this year.
Who will benefit?
- Differently-abled individuals
- Destitute persons
- Victims of natural disasters like cyclones, floods, or fire
Naik mentioned that work orders for a portion of these houses have already been issued, and the remaining are in the pipeline. The aim is to prioritize families who are still living in kutcha houses or have lost their homes due to calamities.
Why These Moves Matter
Odisha often faces extreme summers, with rising temperatures leading to severe drinking water shortages, particularly in tribal and rural areas. By expanding water infrastructure and housing, the government hopes to improve living conditions and uphold basic rights like access to water and shelter.
These steps are also part of a larger vision to improve rural infrastructure under the Panchayati Raj Department, focusing on inclusive development.
