In a big move to strengthen the criminal justice system in the state, the Odisha government has created more than 500 new positions in two key departments: the State Forensic Science Services Organisation and the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

Why is this Important?

The criminal justice system includes everything from collecting evidence to prosecuting criminals in court. For this system to work smoothly and fairly, skilled people are needed at every step — from forensic experts who analyze crime scene evidence to lawyers who argue cases in court.

By creating these new posts, the state aims to:

  • Ensure better evidence handling.
  • Strengthen prosecution in courts.
  • Improve conviction rates and reduce case backlogs.

Breakdown of the New Posts

In the State Forensic Science Services Organisation (Total: 247 posts):

These professionals work in labs, examining fingerprints, blood samples, documents, and other evidence found at crime scenes.

  • 1 Joint Director – Senior official overseeing the entire forensic department.
  • 2 Deputy Directors – Assist the Joint Director in managing different forensic labs.
  • 20 Assistant Directors – Head specific divisions like biology, chemistry, cyber forensics, etc.
  • 65 Senior Scientific Officers – Experts who perform and review detailed forensic tests.
  • 71 Scientific Officers – Scientists conducting forensic analysis.
  • 21 Senior Forensic Attendants – Help scientists in labs and manage equipment.
  • 67 Junior Forensic Attendants – Assist in sample handling, cleaning, and basic lab work.

the Directorate of Public Prosecutions & District Directorates (Total: 267 posts):

These are legal professionals who represent the government in court to prosecute criminals.

  • 36 Deputy Directors – Manage public prosecutors across different districts.
  • 3 Public Prosecutors – Senior legal officers who take charge of major criminal cases.
  • 106 Additional Public Prosecutors – Handle cases in sessions courts.
  • 91 Assistant Public Prosecutors – take up cases in magistrate courts.
  • 31 Junior Assistants – Support staff for clerical and legal documentation tasks.

These new legal positions were created as per Section 20 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita
