Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has urged Nepali students at KIIT University in Bhubaneswar to return to campus after recent protests following the tragic death of Prakriti Lamsal, a Nepali student found dead in her hostel under suspicious circumstances.
CM Assures Justice and Normalcy
CM Majhi spoke with Nepali officials, including Counsellors Sanjeeb Das Sharma and Navin Raj Adhikari, assuring them that justice will be served in the case. He also promised that peace and normalcy would be restored at the university and encouraged Nepali students to resume their studies without fear.
A meeting was held at the State Guest House with Nepalese representatives, attended by Odisha Ministers Mukesh Mahaling and Suryabanshi Suraj, along with Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, to discuss the situation and ensure a peaceful resolution. The Foreign Minister of Nepal also spoke with Minister Suryabanshi Suraj regarding the matter.
Actions Taken by the Odisha Government
In response to the incident, the Odisha government and KIIT University have taken several measures:
- Immediate Arrest: The suspect was apprehended at Bhubaneswar airport and taken into judicial custody.
- University’s Appeal: KIIT University has urged Nepali students to return to campus.
- Support Helpline: A 24/7 control room and helpline have been set up to assist students in returning safely.
- Public Apology: KIIT University has issued a public apology, which has been widely shared.
- Suspensions & Terminations: Two senior hostel officials and a senior administrative officer from the International Relations Office have been suspended. Additionally, two security personnel have been dismissed.
- Arrests of University Officials: Five individuals, including three directors of KIIT and two security personnel, have been arrested.
- Support for the Victim’s Family: Psychological and other necessary support have been provided to Prakriti Lamsal’s family.
- Government Oversight: The Additional District Magistrate (ADM) of Bhubaneswar has been stationed at KIIT to ensure order and oversee students’ return.
- AIIMS Support: The Sub-Collector of Bhubaneswar has been assigned to AIIMS Bhubaneswar to assist all stakeholders.
- High-Level Investigation: A special committee, led by the Additional Chief Secretary of the Home Department and other senior officials, has been formed to investigate the case.
The Odisha government is working to ensure justice for the deceased student while maintaining peace on the university campus. Authorities have pledged to take strict action against those responsible and provide a safe environment for all students.
