A moderate earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 shook the region near Puri, Odisha, at around 6:10 am on Tuesday. The tremors originated 91 km beneath the surface, with the quake’s epicenter located in the Bay of Bengal (around 19.52°N, 88.55°E), according to the National Center for Seismology.
Many people in Odisha felt the quake, including residents in Bhubaneswar and those living in coastal districts from Balasore to Paradip. Even towns near Chandipur experienced noticeable shaking. Although the epicenter was in the sea—making the overall impact relatively mild—the tremors extended to areas around the Bay of Bengal, reaching parts of West Bengal and Bangladesh as well.
So far, there have been no reports of any injuries or damage to buildings. However, several morning walkers in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Paradip, and other parts of the state experienced a few seconds of shaking. Additionally, some social media posts noted that people in western Odisha, such as in Rourkela and Sambalpur, also felt the tremors.
Data from the National Center for Seismology indicates that the earthquake’s epicenter was approximately 286 km east of Puri and about 297 km east-southeast of Bhubaneswar.
