Bhubaneswar is set to get a major traffic upgrade! The Odisha government has announced plans to build an elevated corridor along the busy Jayadev Vihar-Nandankanan Road, aiming to tackle the city’s growing congestion issues. Works Minister Prithviraj Harichandan shared that the project, estimated to cost ₹2,700 crore, will significantly improve connectivity and ease traffic flow.
What’s in Store?
The proposed corridor will stretch from Jayadev Vihar Square to Nandankanan, seamlessly connecting with the existing Jayadev Vihar flyover. What makes this project stand out is its double-decker design:
- The first level will have a four-lane road for regular vehicles.
- The second level will be reserved for the city’s upcoming metro rail project.
This smart design ensures better land utilization while keeping traffic moving smoothly.
When Will It Start?
The Detailed Project Report (DPR) is currently being prepared to fine-tune the design and execution. If everything goes as planned, construction will begin by the end of April 2025. The elevated road will be about 8 meters (26 feet) high, while the metro track will be positioned at 14 meters (46 feet) above ground.
To make the transition easier for vehicles, special escape routes will be built at key points, allowing smooth entry and exit between the flyover and service roads. The entire project is expected to be completed between 2027 and 2028.
Why an Elevated Corridor?
Expanding the existing road at ground level would have required the displacement of many families and the removal of thousands of trees—something the government wanted to avoid. By choosing an elevated structure, the project will reduce disruptions, preserve greenery, and still provide an efficient transport solution.
This initiative is a major step forward for Bhubaneswar’s urban development, ensuring faster commutes, better traffic management, and a more modern cityscape. Once completed, residents and commuters can expect a smoother and more organized travel experience in the capital.
