KIIT Incident Sparks Action: Odisha Launches 24/7 Helpline for Nepali Students

Published On:

Following the unfortunate death of Prakriti Lamsal, a Nepali student at KIIT University, the Odisha Higher Education Department has stepped up to ensure the safety and well-being of all Nepali students studying there. The government has set up four dedicated helpline numbers—0674-2396550, 0674-2323401, 0674-2323402, and 0674-2323403—where students can seek assistance for any concerns related to their safety, academics, or overall well-being.

For added convenience, students can also reach out via WhatsApp at 9124620605 to report issues or file complaints. This was confirmed by IAS officer Kali Prasanna Mahapatra, the Director of the Higher Education Department.

Why This Initiative Was Launched

The move comes in response to the tragic death of a third-year Nepali student at KIIT, which has raised serious concerns about student safety. The incident, reportedly a case of suicide, has led to widespread unrest among students and prompted immediate action from both the Indian and Nepali governments.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the Odisha government has set up a 24/7 helpdesk to assist affected students. A team of nine officials will be available round the clock to address any concerns related to students’ safety, return to Nepal, or academic matters.

In an official statement, the Information & Public Relations (I&PR) Department emphasized that the helpdesk is now fully operational and will provide immediate support to students in distress. Parents and students are encouraged to use these resources to ensure a smooth return to campus and uninterrupted academic progress.

Diplomatic Talks & Investigation Underway

The incident has also drawn attention at a diplomatic level. Nepal’s Foreign Minister, Arzu Rana Deuba, recently discussed the matter with the Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava, highlighting the concerns of Nepali students studying at KIIT. Nepal has officially raised the issue with Indian authorities, urging necessary measures for the safety of its students.

Meanwhile, a high-level investigation led by the Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) of the Home Department has been launched to uncover the circumstances surrounding Prakriti Lamsal’s death.

As both governments work towards a resolution, the Odisha administration has reassured students and their families that their safety, security, and academic future remain a top priority.
