Odisha is experiencing a scorching heatwave, with Jharsuguda topping the temperature charts on Friday at a sweltering 41.8°C, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The heatwave is expected to persist across the state from March 14 to 18, bringing intense heat and discomfort.
Heatwave Grips Odisha
At least 12 locations in the state crossed the 40°C mark on Friday, signaling the arrival of peak summer conditions. After Jharsuguda, Angul followed closely at 41.1°C, while Bolangir and Titlagarh recorded 40°C each. Other affected places included:
- Sonepur, Boudh, Bhawanipatna – 40.5°C
- Sambalpur – 40.3°C
- Hirakud, Sundergarh, Dhenkanal – 40.1°C
- Bhadrak – 40°C
Meanwhile, Bhubaneswar recorded a relatively lower 37.2°C, but the humidity at 78% made conditions uncomfortable. Nearby Cuttack saw the mercury rise to 38.2°C, with similar humidity levels.
IMD Issues Heatwave Warnings
With temperatures soaring, the IMD has issued heatwave alerts for several districts:
🔶 Orange Warning (Be Prepared for Action)
- Heatwave conditions are expected on Saturday in parts of Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, and Mayurbhanj.
🟡 Yellow Warning (Stay Aware)
- Heatwave conditions may also affect Sundergarh, Boudh, Bolangir, Keonjhar, Bargarh, Balasore, Gajapati, Bhadrak, Sonepur, Angul, Dhenkanal, and Kalahandi.
Precautions Advised
With the rising temperatures, health risks increase, particularly for infants, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses. The IMD has urged people to take precautions such as:
