In a major step toward healthier farming and healthier lives, the Odisha government has launched the Balabhadra Jaivik Chasa Mission, a new initiative aimed at promoting organic agriculture across the state.
This move comes in response to rising concerns over the health hazards linked to the heavy use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in farming. According to Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan, these toxic chemicals are believed to be a key factor behind the surge in cancer cases, especially in the districts of Balangir, Sambalpur, and Bargarh.
A Wake-Up Call from Western Odisha
Between 2021 and 2023, western Odisha saw an alarming rise in cancer diagnoses, with Bargarh district alone reporting around 6,000 new cases. Across the region, the total number of cancer patients reached an average of 22,000, based on government health data.
Health experts and environmental researchers have long warned that prolonged exposure to chemical-laden farming methods can severely impact both human health and the environment — and Odisha is now taking that warning seriously.
A Mission for Healthier Farms and Safer Food
The Balabhadra Organic Farming Mission (Jaivik Chasa Mission) is designed to help farmers switch to chemical-free, sustainable practices. The aim is twofold:
- Reduce health risks for both farmers and consumers
- Restore soil health and protect the environment
By promoting organic methods, the government hopes to create a farming culture that’s safer, more sustainable, and aligned with long-term public health goals.
Support for Farmers: Incentives and Awareness Coming Soon
To make this transition possible, the government plans to roll out:
- Incentives to support farmers adopting organic farming
- Awareness campaigns to educate communities about the benefits of going organic
However, agriculture experts say more needs to be done. They’re calling for ongoing research, better training, and strong policy backing to ensure this mission becomes a lasting success.
Looking Ahead: A Healthier, Greener Odisha
With the launch of this mission, Odisha is making a bold shift — from chemical-heavy farming to eco-friendly, health-conscious agriculture. The goal is clear: fewer diseases, safer food, and a cleaner environment for future generations.
The Balabhadra Jaivik Chasa Mission could become a model for other states, showing how sustainable farming can protect both our health and our land.
