Former RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das, 67 and originally from Odisha, has been named as the new Principal Secretary-2 to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet and was announced by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions.

Das, a retired IAS officer from the Tamil Nadu cadre, served as the 25th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. He was appointed in 2018 and even received a three-year extension in 2021, finishing a total tenure of six years when his term ended on December 10 last year.

Before his stint at the RBI, he was the Economic Affairs Secretary during the high-profile demonetization of high-value currency notes in November 2016.

In terms of education, Das holds a master’s degree in History from St. Stephen’s College in Delhi and a Postgraduate degree in Public Administration from the University of Birmingham.

It’s also interesting to note that the current Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, Pramod Kumar Mishra, is another distinguished former IAS officer from Odisha, though he comes from the Gujarat cadre.
