Deputy CM Highlights ‘Shakti’ App’s Role in Women’s Safety at OWM Event

Published On:

Odisha’s Deputy Chief Minister, Pravati Parida, has hailed the newly launched ‘Shakti’ mobile application as a transformative step towards ensuring women’s safety in the state. The app was officially introduced by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday, and according to Parida, it is set to be a game-changer in supporting and protecting women.

A Safe Space for Survivors

Speaking at an event commemorating the second foundation day of Odisha Women in Media (OWM)—an association representing over 200 women journalists—Parida emphasized the app’s role in streamlining the legal process for survivors of sexual assault.

“Currently, survivors are forced to relive their trauma multiple times—first to their families, then to the police, doctors, lawyers, and finally in court. The ‘Shakti’ app allows them to record their statements digitally, which will be used as evidence in court, reducing the emotional burden of repeating their ordeal,” she stated.

A Women-Led Court for Justice

In a groundbreaking initiative, the Odisha government also plans to establish a dedicated court where all key roles—judge, lawyer, and court staff—will be held by women. The move aims to create a more empathetic and secure environment for survivors to seek justice without fear or hesitation.

Encouraging Safety Audits and Skill Development

Highlighting the increasing presence of women in leadership roles across industries, Parida underscored the need to prioritize their security. She called on women journalists to conduct safety audits within their cities and assured them of the government’s support in implementing necessary safety measures.

She also urged OWM to take the lead in skill development for aspiring female journalists, particularly for those unable to afford journalism training.

Honoring Excellence in Journalism

As part of the event, two distinguished journalists, Sobha Surin, and Sumitra Sahoo, were honored with the OWM Awards for Excellence in Journalism. Each received a cash prize of Rs 5,000 in recognition of their contributions to the field.

Launch of ‘Arohi’ and Inspiring Stories of Women Entrepreneurs

The annual OWM magazine, ‘Arohi,’ was officially launched by Parida alongside senior journalists Uma Sudhir and Alka Sahani.

The event also featured an inspiring panel discussion where grassroots women entrepreneurs shared their success stories. Among them were Bhagabati Sahu from Jajpur, Jayanti Maharana from Balasore, and footballer Pusparani Bhuyan, who spoke about their journeys of overcoming challenges and achieving success.

Acknowledging Women’s Contributions in Media

Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Mayor, Sulochana Das, emphasized the crucial role women journalists play in shaping society.

OWM President Kasturi Ray welcomed the attendees, while Secretary Minati Singha presented the annual report. The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Vice-President Sharada Lahangir, marking a successful celebration of women’s achievements and empowerment in media and beyond.
