Researchers at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela have developed a cutting-edge AI-powered model that can accurately predict blood sugar levels in people with diabetes. This innovation aims to help both patients and healthcare professionals make more informed and personalized decisions regarding diabetes management.

How Is This Model Different?

Unlike conventional blood sugar prediction methods, which often require manual adjustments and struggle with long-term accuracy, this AI-driven system automatically analyzes blood sugar trends to spot important patterns. By learning from past fluctuations, the model provides highly accurate forecasts, enabling patients to make timely changes to their insulin dosage, diet, and exercise routines.

According to Professor Mirza Khalid Baig, an assistant professor in the Department of Biotechnology and Medical Engineering at NIT Rourkela, the team’s biggest innovation was incorporating multi-head attention layers within a specialized neural network. This allows the system to focus on the most relevant glucose data while filtering out unnecessary information, improving accuracy without requiring large datasets or complex computing power.

“Our goal was to create a smart, efficient tool that can seamlessly integrate into existing digital health solutions, making diabetes management easier for both patients and doctors,” Baig explained.

Future Potential and Clinical Trials

The technology has the potential to be integrated into:
Smart insulin pumps for automated insulin delivery
Mobile health apps for real-time glucose tracking
Clinical settings to help doctors create personalized treatment plans

To ensure its effectiveness in real-world scenarios, the researchers are now planning large-scale clinical trials in hospitals, collaborating with experienced diabetes specialists in Odisha.

This project has received support from the Department of Science and Technology (DST), the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), and NIT Rourkela, paving the way for AI-driven advancements in diabetes care.

If successful, this technology could become a game-changer in how diabetes is managed, offering a smarter, more reliable way for individuals to take control of their health.
