The UK government has reported a record number of Pension Credit applications, thanks to an improved online claim process that takes an average of just 16 minutes to complete. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has processed an unprecedented number of claims, significantly reducing the backlog and ensuring financial support reaches the poorest pensioners. This increase in applications follows government efforts to raise awareness about Pension Credit, which provides essential financial aid to low-income retirees.

DWP Processes Record Number of Pension Credit Claims

The DWP has made remarkable progress in processing Pension Credit claims. Since the Chancellor’s announcement, the number of applications awaiting processing has dropped from a peak of 85,500 to just 33,700 by 23rd February. Now, 90% of new applicants use the online system or apply over the phone, with applications taking an average of just 16 minutes to complete. Successful applicants can receive up to £4,300 annually in additional financial support.

  • Three in ten low-income pensioners have not checked their eligibility, while one in ten who qualify have not applied.

The government is also encouraging people to assist elderly relatives and friends in applying for Pension Credit. Low-income pensioners, particularly those who are isolated, may be unaware of their eligibility. By spreading awareness, more pensioners can receive the financial support they deserve.
