Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced a major initiative to boost sports in the state. Speaking at the 39th National Sub-Junior (Boys) Handball Championship in Keonjhar, he revealed that the state government will build stadiums in each of the 314 blocks across Odisha. This decision aims to strengthen sports infrastructure at the grassroots level and encourage more youth participation in physical activities.

314 Block-Level SEvery block in Odisha will have its own stadium, ensuring equal sports opportunities for all regions, especially rural areas that often lack proper facilities.
- Massive Investment:
The government has earmarked over ₹4,000 crore for this project. These funds will be used to develop stadiums of different types — at village, block, and district levels. - 8 to 10 Acres of Land per Stadium:
Each block-level stadium will be built on approximately 8 to 10 acres of land, offering ample space for both outdoor and indoor games.
Promoting Both Popular and Traditional Sports
CM Majhi made it clear that while games like cricket, hockey, and football will continue to receive strong support, the government is also serious about reviving and promoting indigenous sports such as:
- Kho Kho
- Kabaddi
- Handball
These traditional sports are especially popular in rural Odisha and can help connect communities to their cultural roots while promoting fitness.
Chief Minister’s Trophy: Scouting Rural Talent
The CM also spoke about the Chief Minister’s Trophy tournaments, a state-level sports event designed to:
- Identify talented athletes in rural areas
- Provide them with the right training and exposure
- Nurture them into competitive players at the national level
This move reflects a long-term vision to build a strong pool of sports talent from the grassroots up, ensuring no child is left behind due to lack of resources.
CM’s Day in Keonjhar: Community Engagement
After the sports event, CM Majhi continued his visit in Keonjhar by:
- Attending the annual function at Mandalpat Nodal High School in Bir Kishorepur
- Participating in a religious event, the Gayatri Yagna, held at Kalatirth ground
His visit underscored the state government’s commitment to blending sports, education, and cultural values in development efforts.
